316L Stainless Steel Tongue Scraper, Built to Actually Remove Bacteria
A stainless steel tongue scraper removes more of the bacteria and coating that cause bad breath than brushing your tongue alone, and Zoral's is made from 316L medical-grade steel so it never rusts, pits, or dulls. Most tongue coating is a biofilm of bacteria, dead cells, and food debris that builds up overnight. A toothbrush moves it around. A rigid U-shaped scraper lifts it off in one pass.
Why 316L Stainless Steel, Specifically
Not all "stainless steel" is the same grade. 316L is the same medical-grade alloy used in surgical instruments and body jewelry, chosen for its resistance to corrosion and its smooth, non-porous surface, which means it does not hold onto bacteria between uses the way plastic or rubber scrapers can.
| Material | Durability | Bacteria buildup on the tool | Typical lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 316L stainless steel (Zoral) | Rigid, holds its shape | Low, non-porous surface | Years, no replacement needed |
| Copper | Softens and bends over time | Low to moderate, can tarnish | 6-12 months before replacing |
| Plastic | Flexes, can crack | Higher, porous surface scratches easily | 1-3 months before replacing |
How to Use Your Zoral Tongue Scraper
- Stick out your tongue and place the scraper as far back as is comfortable.
- Apply gentle, even pressure and pull forward in one motion.
- Rinse the scraper under water after each pass.
- Repeat 3 to 5 times, working from back to front, until the coating is gone.
- Rinse your mouth and rinse and dry the scraper before storing it.
Use it once a day, ideally each morning before brushing, since bacteria and coating build up most overnight. Scraping twice a day is safe, but scraping more than that or pressing too hard can irritate the tongue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a tongue scraper actually help with bad breath? Yes. Research cited by Healthline and Cleveland Clinic shows tongue scraping removes significantly more bacteria and odor-causing compounds than brushing the tongue with a toothbrush alone.
How long does a 316L stainless steel tongue scraper last? Years, with no fixed replacement schedule, as long as it is rinsed and dried after each use.
Is stainless steel better than copper or plastic? Stainless steel holds its shape longer than copper and does not develop the surface scratches that let bacteria collect the way plastic does, so it stays effective and hygienic for longer.
